Buell (Mindhunter's Cameron Britton), the handyman who spends his days fixing Anna's mailbox, seems a little… off. Anna's judgmental neighbor Carol (Brenda Koo) fuels gossip around town that she's "bats--- crazy," and there's definitely something thumping around in Anna's attic — unless it's just the house settling? When she's not reading mysteries with names like The Woman Across the Lake and The Girl on the Cruise, Anna uses her limitless supply of Corningware dishes to make chicken casserole, perhaps the world's most suburban meal. In other words, there’s a real psychological thriller in this series, even if the details are a bit quirky. They subvert the genre just enough to generate some big laughs, which is the goal of a show like this. But if it went completely off the rails, people would start checking out quickly.

Ultimately – and I’ve watched all eight episodes – this tonal confusion makes it ludicrous at best and at worst disturbing. Anyway, you don’t need to be a 2010s thriller fan to guess the softly lampooned cliches that lie within. The woman on the edge who looks like she has never been within 10ft of any actual edge, the sexy suspenseful vibes, and the hot guy who may or may not be a murderer. What’s really creepy about this “darkly comedic”, “built to be binged” limited series is that its title is the only spoofy thing about it. Otherwise, TWITHATSFTGITW, starring and executive-produced by the usually funny Kristen Bell playing it bewilderingly straight, is not funny at all.
The rest of the opener is a scene-by-scene precis of all that it aims to send up. She drinks bottle after bottle of red wine, without ever appearing to be anything other than sober, bright-eyed and white-toothed. She hears bumps in the attic and spends most of her time obsessing over the handsome stranger and his nine-year-old daughter who have moved into the house across the street. It’s all so tonally flat that intentionally awful lines such as “There’s so many layers to casseroles. Just like there are so many layers to a person”, end up just being awful. Anna Whitaker (Kristen Bell) doesn't have a lot to live for.

I just wish the show had more of that kind of giddy energy, and didn’t stretch out its one-joke premise to such ungainly lengths.
But it’s not just grief distracting Anna; she always thinks there’s someone lurking around her house, even if it’s just a bird that’s gotten in her attic. "Compared to the loopy 'Woman in the Window' or 'Girl on the Train,' both films that in many ways can be taken as their own parodies, this show is just kind of dull," Daniel D'Addario writes for Variety. "The greatest trick 'The Woman in the House…' pulls may be revealing how inventive the movies it’s mocking really are." You can sense that somebody might have imagined this as a one-woman show for Bell, which would at least be an explanation for the fact that in eight episodes, there isn’t a single supporting character with any sort of voice or personality to speak of. She steers into Anna’s mania and gives quality line readings to some flimsy punchlines. Veronica Mars fans know that Bell would be even better with sharper comedy and actual grounded pathos, but that’s not her fault.
